hand is behind Stonecutters Island. The latter is however

only 200 feet high, but its distance is one mile only from

the site.

Both sites seen satisfactory from the military point of view.

Site No. 3 is less satisfactory from the military point of view, but is that recommended by the Committee,

because it is comparatively flat and has plenty of water,

but on the other hand it is only accessible from the sea,

and is not considered very healthy.

It seems quite possible that these disadvantages would outweigh the disadvantages of the other two sites.

The high ground to the North will shorten the range of the Station on any of the Sites in that direction, and the directional aerial for Singapore would be slightly better for signalling to the North than an all round aerial, but this latter would be better for signalling to the Eastward which may be considered important by the Admiralty.

If it is possible to select a really suitable site for an all round aerial, it seems a pity to sacrifice such suitable site for the purpose of having a good directional aerial, and therefore saving Power, in an

unsuitable position.

The advantages of a directional aerial over an all

round aerial are

1. For a given Power the Range is greater in the direction of the line of the aerial.

2. Duplex working is facilitated.
